Lake Taneycomo
Overview
Flowing through the heart of the Ozarks, Lake Taneycomo offers a unique blend of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and year-round appeal. Located just below Table Rock Dam near Branson, Missouri, this cold-water lake is renowned for its clear waters and exceptional trout fishing, making it one of the top angling destinations in the Midwest. Originally part of the White River, Lake Taneycomo was formed in 1913 with the construction of Powersite Dam. Its character changed significantly after the completion of Table Rock Dam in 1958, which introduced cold water releases that transformed the lake into a premier habitat for trout. Today, it is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout, attracting anglers of all skill levels. Fishing is at the center of life on Lake Taneycomo, but it also offers opportunities for boating, kayaking, and scenic waterfront relaxation. The lake’s gentle flow and picturesque surroundings make it ideal for both recreation and quiet enjoyment. Walking paths, parks, and access points throughout the Branson area provide easy ways to experience the lake from shore. Lake Taneycomo winds through Branson and Forsyth, offering a mix of vibrant activity and peaceful stretches. Its proximity to Branson means residents and visitors can enjoy world-class entertainment, dining, and shopping just minutes from the water, while still experiencing the tranquility of the Ozarks. Managed in partnership by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Missouri Department of Conservation, the lake is carefully maintained to support recreation, conservation, and water quality.
